Mr. Anthony F. Skane, 90, went home to the Lord on Sunday, January 20, 2008. He had currently been a resident at Sitrin Health Care Center for four months and had been previously cared for at home for five years by his loving wife. Anthony was born in Cairo, Egypt and came to this country with his family at the age of four. He was the son of the late Louis and Klelia (Karaze) Shkane. He was educated locally and graduated from UFA High School. On June 28, 1941, Anthony married the former Thelma Bird at St. Patrick's Church in Clayville and they shared a close relationship with their family for 66 ½ years. Anthony had a strong work ethic and always held several jobs and stayed physically active. In his early years, he was a lifeguard at Power Dam and was an avid swimmer and talented diver. He was employed with the Utica Fire Dept. for 26 years and retired as Captain in 1976 after he was seriously burned in a fire. Anthony worked for many years with the Red Cross as Director of Health Services and Director of the Red Cross Aquatic School. He was an adjunct instructor at MVCC College where he instructed EMT's and taught CPR classes. He was well known and admired for all the first aid classes he taught in the area, especially in the local schools. Anthony worked for the Oneida County Sheriff's Dept. in various capacities such as a first aid instructor, and did boat patrol on area lakes, as well as taught swimming and lifesaving classes. In the winter he enjoyed speed skating and skiing and was a member of ski patrol at Turin. His greatest enjoyment was the summers he spent with his family at their camp on Otter Lake. Anthony is survived by his wife, Thelma; two daughters and their husbands, Sharon and Richard Engle, Frankfort, and Sylvia and Wayne Gentile, New Hartford; seven grandchildren, Varinya (Engle) and Bill Sheppard, New Hartford, Todd and Michele Mcintyre Engle, Florida, Dresden (Engle) and Paul Olcott, Rochester, Marissa Gentile, Syracuse, Wayne and Susan (Wagner) Gentile, Whitesboro, Rochelle (Gentile) and Chad Hull, New Hartford, and Jordan Gentile, New Hartford, as well as fourteen great grandchildren; one sister, two brothers, and three sisters-in-law, Antoinette Griffith, New Hartford, Edward and Margaret (Joseph) Shkane, Ohio, Dr. Albert and Honorable Judge Joan (Teuchert) Shkane, New Hartford, Lillian (Bird) Strong, Florida as well as by many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents; his in-laws, Bertha (Durham) and Melvin Bird; one sister, two sisters-in-law, and four brothers-in-law, Jeanette (Shkane) and Tully McKelvey, Mary (Rindenello) Shkane, Celina (Bird) and Henry Vanderwood, Edward Strong, and Bernard Bird. Mr. Skane's funeral will be held Friday, January 25, 2008 at 8:45 am from the Heintz Funeral Home, 1517 Whitesboro St., Utica and at 9:30 am at St. Mary Mt. Carmel Church, Utica where his Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. His burial will take place in St. Mary's Cemetery, Clayville. Calling Hours will be held Thursday evening at the funeral home from 5:30 ? 8 pm. In lieu of flowers, those wishing may donate to a charity of your choice in Anthony's memory.
