Obituary of Joanne and Joseph Barbero

Please share a memory of Joanne and Joseph to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Our parents, Joanne T. (Elacqua) Barbero and Joseph N. Barbero passed into eternal life within two hours of each other on Tuesday September 7, 2021 surrounded by our love. Their legacy to us was one of hard work and care, tender generosity and respect, simple faith and selfless love. Mom was born in Century, West Virginia on February 22, 1940, the daughter of the late Peter and Palma Esposito Elacqua. Dad was born in Utica, NY, on September 13, 1937, the son of the late Nicholas and Josephine Catrombone Barbero. Both were educated in local schools and married on September 19, 1959. They were inseparable throughout life and even in death. Mom worked as an assembler at General Electric and at Lockheed Martin. She retired in 1996. Dad was employed in the landscaping department for the Utica City School District and retired in 1999. They were both parishioners at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel/Blessed Sacrament Church and the St. Rosalia Society. Mom was also a member of the Mt. Carmel Society and dad was a member of the Holy Name Society. They are survived by their eight loving children; Nancy Wrate of Utica, Christine Davern (Darren LeClare) of Oswego, Josette Maldonado and Nicole Barbero both of Utica, Debbie Barbero (Bob Crouse) of Florida, Joseph (Jamie) Barbero, Frank Barbero (Samuel Tosi) and Salvatore Barbero all of Utica; and their nine grandchildren, Daniel Wrate, Jennifer and Cesar Medina, Patrick Davern, Joshua and Mickey Davern, Ray and Jennifer Maldonado; Alyssa and Dwane Eckes, DeSiree and Jacob Perkins, Nicholas and Joseph III Barbero. They were predeceased by their son, Nicholas Joseph Barbero. Also surviving are mom’s brother-in-law Claude Rahauiser, and dad’s sister and brother-in-law, Roseanne and Michael D’Allessandro. They are also both survived by 12 great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Mom was predeceased by her five sisters and two brothers-in-law; Mary Valenti, Augie DeCarlis, Ellen and Louie Geno, Grace and Frank Leone, and Congetta Elacqua, and her three brothers and sisters-in-law; Anthony and Laura Elacqua, James and Mary Elacqua and Joseph and Flora Elacqua. Dad was predeceased by his sister and brother-in-law, Vincenza and Frank Carboni, and his brother, Salvatore Barbero. Their funeral will be held on Monday, September 13, 2021 (dad’s birthday) at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel/Blessed Sacrament Church with the Rev. Jim Cesta officiating. Burial will be held at Calvary Cemetery. There will be no public calling hours. Arrangements are entrusted to Heintz Funeral Service, Inc., 408 Herkimer Road, Utica NY. Contributions in their memory can be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital. Our parents were generous to many charities but their hearts were touched deeply by encouraging the happiness of all children. For those unable to attend the funeral Mass, a live stream will be offered at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel/Blessed Sacrament You Tube Page
