Obituary of John James Salerno, Sr.
Mr. John James Salerno, Sr., 91 of Deerfield, passed away on Monday, January 29, 2024, at Wynn Hospital with his loving family by his side.
John was born in Herkimer, NY, on July 21, 1932, the son of Dominic and Angelina (Donato) Salerno and received his education at Herkimer High School. On November 12, 1955, John was united in marriage with Helen Ellis at St. Louis Gonzaga Church in Utica, a loving and devoted union of 65 years, until Helen’s death in 2020. At one time, John was employed with Sperry UNIVAC Company, later with MDS and PAR technologies and lastly, BF Goodrich. John was actively involved with the Republican party, was a member of the Whitesboro School Board, Deerfield Planning Board, Deerfield Assessment Board, Oneida County BOCES Board and a parishioner of St. Mark’s Church in N. Utica. He also enjoyed golf, carpentry and home improvement projects, watching sporting events and Fox News. He found great joy spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Mr. Salerno is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Jacqueline and James Sherry of Ellicott City, MD; two sons and daughters-in-law, John, Jr. and his wife, Barbara of Deerfield and David and his wife, Susan of N. Utica; seven cherished grandchildren, Steven Salerno of Washington, DC, Eric and Megen Salerno of Severna Park, MD, Nicole Salerno of Philadelphia, PA, Matthew and Cassandra Sherry of Fairfax, VA, Amanda and Cooper Flynn of Augusta, GA, Dominick Salerno of Summerville, MA and Stephanie Salerno of Warren, RI; three adored great grandchildren, Olivia, Hannah and Damien and was anxiously awaiting the arrival of his fourth great grandchild. He is also survived by one niece, Annette (Ken) Kudrewicz of Ilion. In addition to his beloved wife, Helen, John was predeceased by a daughter, Cynthia Salerno; and three sisters, Margaret, Katherine and Joanne (Jennie).
The family would like to thank all of John’s friends for their support and care throughout the years, especially his neighbor Kevin.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to John’s funeral Mass of Christian burial on Friday, February 2, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mark’s Church, 440 Keyes Rd., N. Utica. He will be laid to rest in Calvary Cemetery in Utica. Visitation for family and friends is Thursday, (today) February 1st from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at the Heintz Funeral Home, 408 Herkimer Rd., N. Utica.
